  1. "Killed In (re)Action"
    (Ripple Effect)
    ••••••••••••••••••••••
We egressed from Fallujah, to my soul windows are threats.
    ••••
Scan into each spider hole, for sniper silhouettes.
    ••••
If there was a shooter, cross-hairs would be on me.
    ••••
Machine-gun plus insurgent equals target; you're deceased.
    ••••
Time to go to sleep, turn life's switch off; rest in peace.
    ••••
No, I wasn't scared, but of course I did have fear.
    ••••
I thought about my mom, thought last days spent could be here.
    ••••
No more I do remember, no more I see or hear.
    ••••
Entry wound into my head, exit wound out rear.
    ••••
    Seven-six-two-caliber, brain hemmhorage too severe.
    ••••
To Dover Air-Force Base, destinitation K-I-A.
    ••••
By commercial jet we'll fly, Semper Fi-flight just one way.
    ••••
Back onto my planet; my city, yes my home.
    ••••
So close, but oh so far; at attention, you now lay.
    ••••
Bugle horn, it's brass; like the 5-5-6 of past.
    ••••
Taps, it soon plays last; prayers for all those who have passed.
    ••••
Patience is a virtue, now hurry up and wait.
    ••••
Soon you go to hell-regroup, then go guard Heaven's Gate.
    ••••
    Twenty-One, Seven-Guns, Devil Dog Salute.
    ••••
Jarheads duty detail, flag draped coffin my Dress Blues.
    ••••
    The folded-stars and stripes-symbolic triangle, that's left.
    ••••
Placed into my wive's warm hands, my Tri-ang-le of Death.
    ••••
I'm sorry to my loved ones, I wish my eyes did see; location of the Sunni, Muslim martyr-Ji-ha-di.
    ••••
One shot and one kill, the round rippled with effect.
    ••••
I knew I could be killed, job performance; life or death.
    ••••
The latter's not a raise, six-feet lower; paid respect.
    ••••
The prior means I killed, either way my life is wrecked.
    ••••
Tear your souls apart, break each beating empty heart.
    ••••
Your family will die too, combat killed all just like you.
    ••••
You're a noose around their necks, synching slowly, since war's start.
    ••••
Each day you steal their breaths, like a thief commits a theft.
    ••••
Marine, killed in action; re-action, family killed.
    ••••
    You died, for your country.
    ••••
    They died for your death.

▪Spider Hole: Saddam Hussein was found in a small oxygenated, underground bunker known as a "spider hole," in Tikrit, Iraq; December 13, 2003. He was armed, but immediately surrendered to U.S. Special Forces.
▪Seven Six Two: 7.62×39 is the caliber of the round used in many Iraqi weapon platforms, most notably; the AK-47 Assault Rifle.
▪Dover Air Force Base: Located in Deleware, all troops killed overseas are flown stateside, and their initial destination is Dover, where specific procedures, such as uniform decoration and tailoring, etc.
▪Guarding Heaven's Gate: United States Marines are suposedly responsible for "guarding Heaven's gate." Contradictory to this theory, US Marines who are Killed in Action in a combat zone, "go to Hell, to regroup."
▪Jihadi: Jihad generally refers to combat on the name of Islam. Muslims wage Jihad (Religious War) against Christians and Jews. Jihadi is a bit of a spin off, used as slang to refer to an enemy fighter, of either sex; Jihadi-Joe/Jihadi-Jane.
▪The Round Rippled In Effect: Ripple Effect generally refers to how one event causes a reaction in another. When a Service Member, or in any case usually, the death of one family member can obviously have an effect on another member, whose reaction then has an effect on another... etc.
▪556: 5.56 is the caliber of the ammunition used in most American military rifle platforms; such as the M-16, M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, and M-4 Carbine.
▪Brass: the cartridge that holds the gunpowder in a bullet is made of brass, and after firing a round, we refer to the shell casings as "spent brass."

  2. "Carry On" (Non-fiction)
    •••••••••••••
12 years have gone by since our war in Iraq.
    ••••
A long while it's been, but the memories are fresh.
    ••••
I can still feel the hot flak, tearing my flesh.
    ••••
Penetrating both legs, my arm and my back.
    ••••
The kill radius dictatated, we all should have died.
    ••••
How we survived, anomalies in fact.
    ••••
Two mortars they flew, through Allah's blue skies.
    ••••
One landed in front, the next behind us in back.
    ••••
    Candy-McCann-Ott... Then Pasq-Doc-and-me.
    ••••
Did find three large shells, three large "Artie" IED's.
    ••••
    Life flashed through my eyes.
    ••••
Shrapnel ripped right through my thighs.
    ••••
Two perfect impacts, just five to ten feet.
    ••••
"Wait, we're not dead, how can this be?"
    ••••
"We should be in pieces, blown up on this street?"
    ••••
No time for debate, now just stay alive.
    ••••
Fourteen metal fragments, went through you with hate.
    ••••
Blood poured down my face, "DOC, I'M HIT" I then cried.
    ••••
Doc got hit too, now all's up to fate.
    ••••
My left leg was paralyzed, on a road where I lied.
    ••••
Blood pooled around me, Arab wasteland I'd die.
    ••••
In Iraq's brown desert, I'd meet my demise.
    ••••
Get up and find cover, get up and survive.
    ••••
    My fireteam and family.
    ••••
    Brothers, we're bound.
    ••••
Eternal bonds solid, strong friendships were found.
    ••••
Our enemies all over, throughout all the towns.
    ••••
I remembered my Oath, and our code, they applied.
    ••••
Took my fear and my pain, said my last few goodbyes.
    ••••
Suck it up, grab your SAW, a belt fed killing pig.
    ••••
    Automatic light machine gun.
    ••••
    "M," dash TWO, FOUR, NINE.
    ••••
    "Carry On," "Semper Fi."
    ••••
    Fight or you'll die.
    ••••
From my broke blood soaked knees, this "Grunt" he did rise.

  3. "Post-Parasitic-Stress"
    ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Diagnosis, yes it's stress; disorder post-traumatic.
    ••••
It left you like a shell; depressed emotions automatic.
    ••••
Affected or infected, now please state your perspective.
    ••••
Twelve years is very long to be emotionally unexpressive.
    ••••
Evolution is in action, yes it is excessive.
    ••••
Take out all combatants, yes our training; it's incessant.
    ••••
Use violence of action, "Kill Marine!" ..becomes obsessive.
    ••••
Ignorant civilians are intensive and offensive.
    ••••
Stellar VA care and private Dr's, too expensive.
    ••••
Those War things that were heard, and all war things inbetween,
    ••••
Caused this stress that is emphatic, with deep wounds that can't be seen.
    ••••
A yearning to return, another way I truly feel.
    ••••
Impossible, you can't contest, and no you can't appeal.
    ••••
Post-Traumatic parasite, disorder stressed out ghost.
    ••••
Lance Corporal always haunted, and the parasite's new host.

  4. "P.O.W." (Historical Fiction)
    •••••••••
For me, Iraq seems, like a nightmare that I chase.
    ••••
As the sand of that hot land, on my tongue I still can taste.
    ••••
Anxious racing thoughts, life post-war, a tragic waste.
    ••••
Simplicity, it's simple. And that's simply the case.
    ••••
Hot Arab desert wind, under Allah's burning sun.
    ••••
Hellish scorching heat from Saddam's breath upon your face.
    ••••
War feels so very close, and my tour feels very fresh.
    ••••
This truth so very true, and it's truth and nothing less.
    ••••
Now to face the charges, your mind is now confined.
    ••••
In the Muslim prison, Two-Thousand-Five arrest.
    ••••
Expect a full life sentence, for its likely I'll attest.
    ••••
It's stuck within Iraq, your mind handcuffed, now confess.

  5. "Bureaucratic Bullshit"
    •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Xanax and opioids, and Prozac and more!
    ••••
Take these drugs from the VA, they're your hope and your cure!
    ••••
Come back once a month and we'll give you some more, to fix what is broke from your trauma filled tour.
    ••••
PTSD you do have, the prognosis is poor.
    ••••
Diagnosed after fighting, while in the Marine Corps.
    ••••
We're honest, we're flawless, our intentions are pure.
    ••••
Yes, we are sure that our care is not poor!
    ••••
No, we’re not pill pushers, we want you to heal.
    ••••
Side effects? Please! They're lies! They're not real!
    ••••
Those rumors about us? They're slander, so fake!
    ••••
Just do what we say, and comply for God's sake!
    ••••
Bureaucracy? Maybe, but for you we are here.
    ••••
Now be a good veteran, and listen up, Dear!
    ••••
Our doctors do know just what meds you should take.
    ••••
They're tailored for symptoms that your War did make.
    ••••
Incompetent? Of course not! More rumors say they!
    ••••
We are your government, believe us, okay?
    ••••
Our employees? How are they? Top notch! We repeat.
    ••••
The cream of the crop, they cannot be beat!
    ••••
Incompetent and careless? No way, not a chance!
    ••••
Not possible can’t happen, who makes up these rants?
    ••••
Why do you ask about continuity of care?
    ••••
Retaining good doctors? You say that is rare?
    ••••
Don't ask, we won't tell, we think that is fair.
    ••••
Those issues you hear about, NO they're not true!
    ••••
Don't fret and stay quiet, believe us we swear!
    ••••
Why do providers seem to change all the time?
    ••••
They're selfish, they're goal simply "making a dime."
    ••••
Those who do say different, blatant false lies.
    ••••
They're simply sick veterans, they're most likely high.
    ••••
You're asking why it's so hard to terminate staff?
    ••••
Well they're federal employees, and why do you ask?
    ••••
It has nothing to do with their duties, or tasks.
    ••••
Just more lies from vets, and their slander attacks.
    ••••
They're federal employees, their jobs are secure.
    ••••
Their goal is to help, that's what they're there for.
    ••••
Why would we fire these selfless great staff?
    ••••
You heard some don't care? Well that's worth a laugh!
    ••••
You say that’s not true, well we say you are wrong!
    ••••
We say you’re not well, you've seen combat too long.
    ••••
Disagree with us? do it! go sing that same song!
    ••••
It’s fine, that’s your choice, who said that was wrong?
    ••••
Go where you think you’ll receive the best care.
    ••••
Go and be well! Don't use us be gone.
    ••••
Did we mention we won't pay the med bills accrued?
    ••••
Yup that is right, those fees they're on you!
    ••••
You'll be back soon when your savings are lost!
    ••••
We said that you could not pay what private care costs!
    ••••
Our government priority? Of course, it is you!
    ••••
Those who disagree? They just have no clue!
    ••••
No, we don't care about money or funds.
    ••••
We know what we’re doing, just trust us my son!
    ••••
Take all these pills and be better you will!
    ••••
The side effects certainly won't make you more ill.
    ••••
If they do make you sick or not feeling so well, that chance you should take, no your life’s not at stake!
    ••••
Socialized medicine, with us what you get.
    ••••
How do you like it? We agree, it’s a hit!
    ••••
Our mistakes mean so much, our care is so good.
So good it's the best, as good as you'll get.
    ••••
So just one more question, that we do have for you.
    ••••
Which is more dangerous, be honest! Okay?
    ••••
A malfunctioning gun, or your local va?

  6. "Calculate" (Realistic Fiction)
    •••••••••••••••
    One-hundred-sixty-eight hours,
    in seven days a week.
    ••••
    Math-time, long-division.
    Twenty-eight of those, I sleep.
    ••••
    Repercussions, deprivation;
    resilience I don't reap.
    ••••
    Some days do bring memories;
    Some memories make me weep.
    ••••
    Other days I isolate,
My soul, so hard to keep.
    ••••
    Diagnosis PTS,
    disorder I attest.
    ••••
    Emotions rest; I do detest.
    Yes my feelings, feel-felt-less.
    ••••
Iraq War; when is war and why.
In Middle Eastern wars friends die.
    ••••
    Combat and in death what's left;
    Unseen wounds, our nation's lies.
    ••••
    Life was always sheltered.
    After combat, life a mess.
    ••••
    My will to live, it flutters;
    on occasion, I'll confess.
    ••••
    Cortisol-stress hormone;
    release means I won’t rest.
    ••••
    I think if my heart simply ceased;
for all it would be best.
    ••••
    How many years do I have left;
I can’t take much more stress.
    ••••
    Shattered past,
    War-torn thoughts;
    ••••
God please help me, let me rest.
God help me pass this stress math test.

  7. (DISCLAIMER: Offensive Content. This poem is NOT intended to be humorous, insensitive, or dehumanizing. It symbolically demonstrates how troops DURING war cope with death and killing, which DOES involve dehumanizing the enemy, as well as desensitization and making "light" out of loss of human life. The job is to kill and to try to not be killed. This is simply reality)

  8. "Sacrificial Lamb"
    •••••••••••••••••••••
Sacrificial and selfless but where is the lamb?
Look over there, the one raising his hand.
Look there he is, saying “Sir, here I am.”
    ••••
Quiet, he’s speaking, his words we now hear.
Silence, please listen, now open your ears.
Here comes his message, pay attention, it's near.
His message so poignant; profound and so clear.
    ••••
"I will not sit idle, I do volunteer."
"Don’t get me wrong as I’m not without fear."
"Don’t think that I’m wrong, as my eyes, well with tears."
    ••••
"Don’t say I am wrong, while in peace, you stay here."
"Don’t feel I am wrong, as I gather my gear."
"I will go fight forward, while you stay in the rear.”
    ••••
It would only be right, if you look in a mirror.
All that is left, you see what is right.
It will not be right, until truth does appear.
    ••••
That lamb took your place, and he offered his life.
He picked up a rifle, some bullets, his knife.
    ••••
He gave you a gift, do you know what it is?
He gave you your everything, and he sacrificed his.
